There is a lot in common between a horse and a painting. Both are archaic by contemporary standards, and neither have much vital work to do except for the few. Often enough both wind up in competition, a gamble unacceptable to most, except, once again, for the few. Guston pointed out that with painting we only see what we pretend to see. I would push it a bit further by saying painting is a hole in reality where we see what we are allowed. Left unfiltered, it would overwhelm us, That filter is minimalism. It is how we try to reason with the present. Like clapping along with Mozart , or nature simplified to the rhythm of horse hooves on the road.
